In response to a packed weekend of Dota 2 action, Valve has released yet another letter update to the fresh 6.84 patch. Although many of the major changes to the Troll-Sniper-Juggernaut meta were well received, the Summit 3 and the Open Qualifiers for the International 5 have prompted a reaction from Icefrog to restore balance to our beloved game.

For your convenience, the official release from Valve can be found here. But we’ll give you a hand and highlight some major changes based on game impact.

1. Addressing the Early 5-man

Mekansm cooldown increased from 45 to 65
Mekansm first item on Shadowfiend shifted from an item build to item commandment during the Summit 3. Chen, Enchantress and Enigma all saw high ban and pick priority as a consquence of their quick build-up towards Mek as well. This change might give us back more variety to the hero pool, and also, reduce the strength of 5-man oriented heroes.

2. Nerfs to the 100% Ban Pick Club

All of the following heroes saw 100% BP rate during the Summit 3 and will be impacted by 6.84c: Gyro, Visage, and Wisp, who had a 97.3% BP rate, but we will grant him (it?) honorary status

The next batch of heroes who were highly prioritized and will recieve nerfs: Brood (83.8), Chen (75.7), Bristle (48.6), Undying (43.2), and Drow (29.7)

Interestingly, Icefrog did not hesitate to directly nerf many of the spells that have boosted these high BP rate heroes from supporting cast to lead actors during the Summit 3. This goes against his typical method of providing balance: implementing changes which are indirect nerfs (like nerfing Tinker by adding magic immunity to jungle creeps) or buffs to counters.

3. Tweaking AOE Gold, XP Bounty

Yet another major change that 6.84 brought about has been retouched, as the calculations behind the gold and XP rewarded from a hero kill have been modified and moderately reduced.

Valve has also made a small rubber-band change, taking a step back to address the one-sided games we have been seeing.

  • AoE Gold Bounty, for teams that are behind, now has a small additional component that doesn’t fully scale with net worth (100/75/50/35/25 for 1/2/3/4/5 heroes, scales linearly from 0 to 4k net worth difference)
